What we do

HAKAM has championed human rights in Malaysia for over 25 years with some success. However, it is a case of one step forward, two steps back.

As Malaysians became more aware of their rights and to question the authorities, we find the same human rights violations we faced more than 25 years ago, …the only  difference is that the violations come with greater severity and frequency. Malaysians continue to face weakened state institutions, rising corruption and crime, racism, religious bigotry and a contempt for intellectual public discourse.

HumanRightsUniversalDeclarationPosterHAKAM strives to continue the work of generating more awareness on human rights. HAKAM will continue to voice out human right abuses. We will continue to take action in defending and preserving human rights for all Malaysians, especially the freedom of expression – be it in parliamentary sittings or out in peaceful assemblies,  in traditional printed media or online anywhere in social media. We endeavour to create space for Malaysians to discuss human rights issues and highlight violations.

We continue to lobby for the repeal of all draconian legislation which curb human rights and fundamental rights enshrined in our Federal Constitution. We continue to represent and speak for those who are victims of human right abuses.

We hope to inculcate a new generation of Malaysians who can bravely speak for themselves. We have aspirations to make Malaysia a nation as envisaged in 1957 by Tunku Abdul Rahman:

“A sovereign democratic and independent State founded upon the principles of liberty and justice and ever seeking the welfare and happiness of its people and the maintenance of a just peace among all nations.” – Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, Malaysia’s 1st Prime Minister.
