PETALING JAYA: The Special Committee on Corruption has called for its recommendations on amendments to anti-corruption laws to be taken up in Parliament as soon as possible.

As one of five independent panels overseeing the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), the special committee had first made the suggestions three years ago, but was disappointed that it had yet to be discussed in Parliament.

“Committee members are also committed to bringing about change for a corruption-free Malaysia.

“In this matter, the Prime Minister himself has in principle made a stand, which supports the recommendations we have made.

“As such, the special committee hopes all parties involved will seriously consider the suggestions to make them a reality,” the committee said in a statement yesterday.

Its report containing the recommendations had also been presented to the Government and then distributed in Parliament last Monday.

Among the key suggestions was to set up an Anti-Corruption Officers Services Commission, the appointment of MACC chiefs under the Federal Constitution, and to create provisions for corporate liability and for the misconduct of civil servants.

The special committee also congratulated the commission on its efforts to combat corruption, which it said was evident in its recent slew of operations and prosecutions.

“Its actions have directly helped in saving the country’s tax revenue and to maintain public order. However, it has to step up to fight corruption more comprehensively and effectively,” the committee said.

Other suggestions include increased allocation for the MACC in 2016, an independent panel to study high-profile investigation case papers on an on-case basis before submission to the attorney-general, and improving policies to be more inclusive towards the public.
